Pagoda is a tiny outdoor cafe at 1430 N. Dorgenois — a walk-up counter, a string-lit garden of picnic tables, and a kitchen that has been worker-owned by the people running it since 2010.

II. The cafe is the people who run it

A cafe owned by
the people pouring the coffee.

Pagoda opened in 2010 as a one-window kitchen at the corner of N. Dorgenois and Bayou Road. There was no dining room, just a counter cut into the wall and a yard out back where neighbors started bringing their own folding chairs.

The cafe has been a worker-owned cooperative for over a decade now — the people taking your order are the same people who decide what goes on the menu, what local roaster pours next, and what the place ought to feel like on a Tuesday morning. Decisions get made together. Tips get shared.

That structure is rare in the food business. We think it’s why the same faces have been working the counter for years — and why a regular knows your order before you finish saying it.

“Hidden gem. The breakfast tacos are some of the best in the city, the back garden is magic in the morning, and the people who run it are the kindest. A true 7th Ward institution.”

“You walk up to a counter, you order, you sit at a picnic table under string lights. That is the whole experience and it is perfect. Coffee was a local roaster I had not had before.”

“Worker-owned, dog-friendly, outdoor only. Everything about it feels intentional. The biscuit is a religious experience and the staff genuinely seem happy to be there.”
